Nata as a Character

I have seen an insane (and I mean insane) amount of people just completely dogging on this guy. Usually the complaint being “he’s annoying” or “all he does is cry”, yet people are clearly not observing the context of why he is like this.

Nata, as far as we know, is the only survivor of his entire village, he witnessed Arkveld slaughter his entire family, friends, neighbors, etc, and lay waste to the area. Of course he’s going to be completely terrified and freaking out when he realizes that he’s still going around doing this. He just started to make friends with the people of Kunafa, what if Arkveld does the same to them? Or the people of Azuz?

Clearly he has survivors guilt, and can you blame him? Everything that happened was completely out of his control, he had no way of stopping Arkveld. Then comes the cutscene in Trailer 4 where he says “You have a weapon, yet you do nothing?” He’s seen the hunter take down these monsters before, saving the people of the village, but he doesn’t completely understand the purpose of a hunter, to keep balance.

While Arkveld is incredibly destructive, he’s also the last of his kind. There is a moral dilemma between making a species extinct again and protecting the people of the Forbidden Lands. Nata does not understand this, he is not a hunter himself, he was only recently introduced to the concept. This is further shown off when he says “I had no idea how big the world is,” in the Launch Trailer. Clearly he has no idea what goes on outside the walls of the Keepers village.

And who’s to say he stays this way? He looks to have a complete character arc, where he goes from seeing Arkveld as a cold blooded killer, to a misunderstood animal (we don’t know what that is, but clearly he’s chained up in the Steelbook art, so something is going on there).

All in all, give the dude a chance, this is one of the few Monster Hunter games where the story takes front and center, with drama and incredible characters. Outright pushing Nata off as “annoying” or “a crybaby” just overall irks me the wrong way, because he’s really not.
